Imagine having everything going in your favour and yet you are not being able to create a stir. Everything Vivek Agnihotri stated through his film The Tashkent Files, seems plausible and yet the film wasn’t applause-worthy. Ragini (Shweta Basu Prasad) is a journalist. She doesn’t have the best reputation (the girl has been accused of embellishing her articles) and is desperately trying to redeem herself. An opportunity presents itself in the form of a phone call; she of course follows the lead. The cryptic caller wants her to find out the truth about the death of India’s second Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shashtri. With one call, begins a series of events.Given the film wants to take a realistic tone, why did the director exclude logic is surprising. Though the reports suggested that he died of a heart attack, conspiracy theories hint at murder. Was Shashtri poisoned? Why was there no post mortem done? There are many questions and it’s obvious that the director is condemning the Congress, though they have taken all precaution not to mention Indira Gandhi at any point. The fact is that the film starts with a very interesting question, but the script is not spruced up with enough facts to make it compelling. There are times when you find yourself wondering why an actor like Naseeruddin Shah, is trying to exaggerate and enunciate so much? Though he has a small part, as does web-series specialist, Pankaj Tripathi, so you don’t think about them as much as you focus on Mithun Chakraborthy. His accent in the film oscillates so profusely that you feel like your ears are having an audio malfunction.Of course, Shweta Basu Prasad tries to give the film her best shot. While Agnihotri has asked some good questions, he hasn’t supported his theories with anything more than just possibilities.
